FURNITURE BY ARCHITECTS: INTERNATIONAL MASTERPIECES OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY DESIGN AND WHERE TO BUY THEM
MARC EMERY
EXPANDED EDITION
Idioma Inglés.
Furniture by Architects is the first comprehensive art book/resource catalogue of its kind. In this newly es panded edition, more than 600 pieces of furniture and home furnishings by more than 100 internationally re nowned architects are pictured and described. Best of all, nach piece is still being produced, and a complete list of manufacturers and/or distributors is provided. The entire range of twentieth-century master designers is covered, from Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926) to Richard Meier and Michael Graves (both barn 1934). Among the architects included in the expanded section are Frank Lloyd Wright (1869-1959), Robert Venturi (born 1925), and Renzo Piano (born 1939). Here, among many other of their pieces, are Alvar Aalto's chairs, tables, lamps, and vases, Le Corbu sier's sofa, chaise lounge, and stool: Josef Hoffmann's china and fabric designs, Charles Rennie Mackin- tosh's cupboard, carpets, and candlesticks; and nearly 600 more examples of twentieth-century furniture, fabric, and objects, from lamps to tea seta, by archi tects such as Charles Eames, Eileen Gray, Walter Gropius, Adolf Loos, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, J. J. P. Oud, Gerrit Rietveld, Eero and Eliel Saar- inen, Frank Gehry, Charles Gwathmey, Gio Ponti, Alison and Peter Smithson, Jean Prouvé, Arata Iso- zaki, and Alvaro Siza.
The idea of the architect as a total designer dates back to the eighteenth century, when architects began to apply their skill and imagination to designing a building's contents as well as its structure. However, in 1925 Marcel Breuer revolutionized furniture design with his Wassily chair, which, being made of tubular steel, was the first of its kind. Today the pieces cre- ated by architects of this century form an important cornerstone of the furniture design industry. Works by earlier twentieth-century architects are still being made or are being reissued; new lines are being originated by some of the finest contemporary architects.
Written and compiled by Marc Emery-former editor-in-chief of L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui, the prestigious French journal-Furniture by Architects is an indispensable tool for interior designers and a valuable reference for anyone interested in archi- tecture and the decorative arts.
